You can get started in stereo photography right now! You just need a (regular) camera. With your camera:

  1. take one picture with the camera's viewfinder on one eye
  2. next, slide the camera's viewfinder over to the other eye. Take another picture. (Try to keep the lens parallel to where it was for the first picture.)

It is as easy as that! You now have two pictures that look at the world as your eyes see it -- in stereo!

Viewing

To view, you can train yourself to look at pairs of stereo images without any equipment. The pictures can be placed either with:

  • the left picture on the left and the right picture on the right (parallel viewing)
  • the right picture on the left and the left picture on the right (cross-eyed viewing)

Try both methods as most people can only do one or the other well.

There! You can take and view stereo photographs without any special equipment.

Next Steps

If you want to take your pictures with more precision, a more sophisticated approach would be to use a slide bar.
